Nail Fungus - What Is It?

Nail fungus (also known as onychomycosis, or ringworm of the nail) appears when when fungus attacks a fingernail or toenail and usually the nail bed which then disfigures and sometimes destroys the nail. The type of nail fungus that can cause this type of infection include yeasts, molds and dermatophytes.

Nail infections can be caused by several different types of fungus:
  • Dermatophytes: a fungus that can grow on the nails, and skin, but does not attack the deeper tissues of the body. The most common dermatophyte, Trichophyton rubrum, typically causes athlete's foot infection, which in turn can infect the toenails. Your nails can get infected by contact with anything that has dermatophytes on them, such as shoes, clothing, nail files, nail clippers, shower and locker room floors, and carpet. Dermatophytes cause about 90% of toenail infections.

  • Yeasts: a fungus that grows on the skin and nails. They are normally present on the human body. Various factors such as illness, antibiotic or birth control pill use, and immune system problems may allow an overgrowth of yeast, leading to a yeast infection.

  • Molds: a fungus that typically grows in soil and can also live on the skin and nails. However, normally molds are not passed between people.

The above are examples of the different ways that fungi can find and entryway to infect a nail. Once the fungi enter they flourish in the dark, moist, warm conditions; such as a shoe. As the nail fungus matures, it eats the nail plate and will eventually disfigure it to the point where external signs will be apparent.

Most people find nail fungus to be an embarrassing problem because it is visually unappealing. As a result, people tend to cover their feet by wearing closed-toe shoes or layers of toenail polish. However, nail polish and tight fitting shoes will only exacerbate an existing problem or the possibility of nail fungus to enter your nail bed.

Although all nails on your hands and feet are vulnerable, the number of toenail related problems far outweigh fungus problems of the fingernail. Furthermore, the big toe and the little toe are usually the first to develop a nail fungus which is likely due to them constantly being exposed to the rubbing from the sides of shoes.

It is important to note that medical research has proven that fungal nail fungus infections will not go away unless treated. Infections must be treated with with anti-fungal medications, which are available in two types; topical form (applied directly to the skin) or as pills. Pills are normally prescribed for more severe infections but can have significant side affects. In rare cases, the nail can be removed. Even in mild cases of nail fungus, the condition tends to return after successful treatment unless a maintenance plan is adopted.
